It looks like the Patriots got some bad news following rookie defensive end Derek Rivers flying back to Boston.

According to ESPN's Mike Reiss and Field Yates, the Patriots fear Rivers suffered a season-ending knee injury in Wednesday's joint practice with the Texans. The rookie out of Youngstown State suffered the injury on a kick return drill and walked off the field with head trainer Jim Whalen, but didn't return. He reportedly didn't fly to Houston with the rest of the team and instead flew back to Boston.

[UPDATE: 11:35 a.m.]: According to NFL Media's Ian Rapoport, Rivers tore his ACL and sprained his LCL, per the initial MRI. A second opinion coming to confirm surgery is needed.

Rivers was having a good camp to date and appeared to be a player who was primed to make a significant impact this season.

The Patriots now appear thin at defensive end. As it stands now, the depth chart has Trey Flowers, Kony Ealy, Geneo Grissom, Deatrich Wise Jr., Caleb Kidder and Keionta Davis.
