FOXBORO -- Perhaps no player on the Patriots gets more criticism than second-year cornerback Cyrus Jones.

After a tough rookie season, Jones had a difficult first preseason game where he allowed two long touchdowns, but bounced back against the Texans with a nice punt return. Still, Jones hears the criticism from fans and responded to it on Tuesday.

“That’s life. It is what it is," Jones said. "I know what I play the game for. I know who I play the game for. The people out there saying this and that, that is not important to me. They’re not out there on the field. They’re not my teammates. They’re not my coaches. They’re not my family. They really don’t mean anything. They’re fair-weather fans. They are going to be with you when you’re doing good and as soon as you do something bad they are on to the next. I have been dealing with that all my life. It don’t do anything to me.”

Jones felt Saturday's game was more indicative of him as a player than the first preseason game.

“I mean, yeah. I got confidence in myself and my teammates have confidence in me," he said. "Coaches got confidence in me and they know what I can do. It is a matter of just taking it day-by-day and focusing on the details and the little things and going out there getting it done, making it happen.”

Bill Belichick has often said players take a big jump from their first year to the second and it appears Jones feels he's ready for it as well.

“You know with anything, the more you do something and the more you’re exposed to it the more comfortable you’ll be over time," he said. "Just naturally being here for awhile and learning little bit more of the ins and outs of how to be a professional, just what it takes to be successful in his league. It is only going to come with time and that is what is going on with me now. A little bit more comfortable than I was last year and the more I am out there the higher up my confidence level will be. I will keep moving forward, making strides and being that player I know I can be.”
