Tom Brady and Michael Strahan squared off in Super Bowl XLII. Now they're joining forces.

The two have formed a startup media company, The Religion of Sports, that hopes to raise $3 million in venture capital with the goal of telling sports-based stories that could challenge ESPN in the battle to produce original content, according to a report in TechCrunch.

They'll be joined by Gothram Chopra, the director of the popular Tom vs. Time videos that have been appearing on Facebook. Brady told TechCrunch in an e-mail that the idea for the startup came five years ago during a meeting with Chopra in Los Angeles.

"I think in our very first meeting, he shared with me the idea of Religion of Sports, and I was hooked immediately!" Brady wrote. "Over the next few years, Gotham and I continued the conversation and the friendship evolved very naturally from there."

Strahan, who works as a co-host on Good Morning America, told TechCrunch that traditional networks "are a dying breed." Brady acknowledged that challenging them will take time.

"Traditional networks and brands have so much experience and traction in the storytelling space that I see most of them being major leaders for a very long time to come, but I think some new players will definitely continue to push them!" he wrote to TechCrunch. "In general, I think the most authentic and emotionally engaging storytelling will rise to the top."
