ESPN's 'Get Up' is losing the few viewers it had

ESPN’s new highly priced morning show continues to bleed viewers. “Get Up” closed out its third week Friday and is attracting even fewer people than when it first launched. 

The debut episode April 3 was a ratings disaster, drawing 283,000 eyeballs. That number was down significantly from the traditional version of “SportsCenter” that aired in its time slot one year prior. 

But now the news is even worse. Tuesday’s show pulled in 233,000 viewers and Wednesday’s offering attracted 243,000 people, per Sports Illustrated. Those numbers are deflating for a number of reasons. For starters, it’s never good when a show that’s paying its anchors an estimated $14.5 million fails to gain any traction, and in fact loses the little traction it had, after a three-week sample. Mike Greenberg, Michelle Beadle and Jalen Rose are all familiar faces to the ESPN audience. At this point, it isn’t even about bringing in viewers. It’s about retaining the people who watched the weekday morning “SportsCenter” up until last month. 

Also, ESPN has rights to the NBA playoffs. That means, lots of folks are watching the network before they go to bed at night –– and apparently turning to another channel first thing in the morning. It is mind-blowing that “Get Up” hasn’t seen any ratings increases during the NBA playoffs so far. Even FS1 studio shows experience a bump during the MLB postseason.

“Get Up’s” futility may begin to affect ESPN’s other weekday offerings. “First Take,” which airs immediately afterwards, is seeing a five percent decrease in viewers this April compared to last year, according to the Big Lead. In March, “First Take” was up two percent year-over-year.
