Patriots grant Tyrone McKenzie his release
By: DJ Bean

Patriots inside linebacker Tyrone McKenzie, a third round pick in 2009 who had been playing on the team's practice squad, has been released to pursue an opportunity on another team's 53-man roster, according to ESPN's Mike Reiss.

The news of McKenzie's release comes on the same day that the team released cornerback Terrence Wheatley, and the team has now seen six players drafted in the first three rounds between 2006-2009 not play out their contracts with the Patriots. McKenzie had missed his rookie season with a torn ACL.

Report: Mankins will play, Wheatley released
By: DJ Bean

The Patriots will activate guard Logan Mankins for Sunday's game against the Browns, according to a report in the Boston Globe. To make room for Mankins on the roster, the team has released cornerback and former second round pick Terrence Wheatley.

Wheatley, chosen 62nd overall in the 2008 NFL draft, played sparingly throughout his Patriots career, registering just four tackles in parts of three seasons. With Wheatley's release, Jerod Mayo, Shawn Crable, Jonathan Wilhite, and Matthew Slater are the only 2008 draft picks remaining on the Patriots. The Pats chose seven players in that draft. Wheatley is one of five players taken by the Patriots in the first three rounds between 2006-2009 who did not stay in New England for their entire rookie contract. Tyrone McKenzie, a third-rounder in 2009, is on the practice squad.

KG on Villanueva: 'He's a nobody'

Kevin Garnett said he is tired of talking about his run-in with Detroit's Charlie Villanueva on Tuesday in Boston's win over the Pistons. Villanueva accused Garnett, via twitter, of calling him a cancer patient during a trash-talking session on the court. Garnett spent Wednesday trying to diffuse the situation, claiming there was a misunderstanding and he simply called the Pistons big man a 'cancer' to his team and the NBA.

Friday, Garnett said he's done talking about it.

"He's a nobody," Garnett said. "I'm not paying attention to nobodies anymore."

It has been quite the emotional week for Garnett, who also got into a shoving match with Andrew Bogut the next night in a home-court win over Milwaukee.

Doc Rivers: Rondo has 'mild' plantar fascitis

Celtics coach Doc Rivers said his head trainer told him hours before Friday's tip-off that Rajon Rondo wouldn't be available to the team in their game against Chicago because of lingering soreness in his left foot.

"[Friday] morning, Eddie [Lacerte] told me that Rondo wasn’t playing because of his foot," Rivers said after Friday's overtime game in which Rondo played 41 minutes, scored 10 points and dished out 11 assists. "And ten minutes later I go down so we can watch film and Rondo said, ‘I’m playing; I’m fine.’"

Asked if Rondo was dealing with plantar fascitis, Rivers said, "I think that's what it is, and it's a mild case but when those get fired up, those are extremely painful."

Rondo took treatment for 30 minutes after the game and then said he has been dealing with pain in both feet, with more pain in his left foot. He also said...

Working OT again: C's beat Thibs, Bulls

In a game that was a throwback to the first round of the 2009 playoffs, the Celtics had a fierce battle with the Bulls, coming out on top, 110-105, in overtime. Ray Allen led the way with 25 points on 9-of-12 shooting while Kevin Garnett added 16. Glen Davis chipped in with 15 off the bench for the Celtics, who won their fourth straight and spoiled the return of former Celtics assistant Tom Thibodeau as Bulls head coach.

The Celtics used a 22-3 run to erase a 23-19 deficit and build 15-point second quarter lead. Boston also led by as many as 16 early in the third quarter before the Bulls turned it on. Trailing 72-64 after three quarters, the Bulls went on a 20-9 run to take an 84-81 lead with 5:12 left on a Joakim Noah jumper. The Celtics jumped back out ahead by six but consecutive threes by Luol Deng knotted the game at 96.
