WILMINGTON — David Krejci had one of his best practices of the preseason on Thursday afternoon at Ristuccia Arena, and afterward said that he'll likely be a "game day" decision for the Oct. 1 regular-season opener against the Washington Capitals at the TD Garden. The 23-year-old center said that crossing over to the right side remains the biggest area of difficulty he's experiencing while taking part in a full practice workload, but he's well ahead of the curve after undergoing surgery on his right hip last spring.
"I think the chances of me playing are a little better. Much better actually. But you know it's going to be, I guess, a game-day decision. It's going to be really close," said Krejci, who less than two weeks ago said there was a 10 percent chance he'd ready for the opener. "The doctors said it was going to be 4-6 months, and next week it'll be four months. So I believe all summer I...
Red Sox pitching coach John Farrell, in an interview on the Dale & Holley Show, suggested that the pairing of starter Josh Beckett with catcher Victor Martinez on Wednesday offered a useful moment for the two to become familiar with one another. That said, Farrell made clear that a decision has yet to be made about whether Jason Varitek or Martinez would catch Beckett in the playoffs.
"There's been nothing etched in stone about who will catch [Beckett] in the postseason," Farrell said.
Farrell allowed that Varitek clearly has a much more developed rapport with Beckett after catching the Sox starter for four years, whereas Martinez has been behind the plate for just two of the pitcher's starts. That said, Farrell also insisted that Martinez and Beckett could make a partnership work between now and the start of the playoffs.
"Can it be done? Absolutely it can be done. ... But we've...
Curt Schilling, during his visit on the Dennis & Callahan Show on Thursday morning, broke down potential issues facing the Red Sox in the postseason. He offered insight into why the Sox have succeeded against the Angels in the playoffs (including the team's ability to "neutralize [Vlad Guerrero] in an epic way"), why Alex Rodriguez struggles in the postseason, whether Jon Lester or Josh Beckett should get a Game 1 start and whether the Red Sox should pursue Jason Bay or Matt Holliday in the offseason, among other topics. He also discussed the reasons that led to his decision not to run for Massachusetts' vacant U.S. Senate seat.
