Mashup: ESPN suspends announcer, anchor

ESPN announcer Ron Franklin was pulled from the radio broadcast of Saturday's Fiesta Bowl following his sexist comment toward a female sideline reporter. Franklin, 68, reportedly referred to Jeannine Edwards as "sweetcakes" during a production meeting when she attempted to join a discussion he was having with another announcer. When she complained, Franklin allegedly then swore at her. ESPN did not have time to find a replacement for Friday's Chick-fil-A Bowl but made the move for Saturday.

The move comes just days after an ESPN anchor was suspended for plagiarizing a newspaper story. Will Selva admitted to copying all but a few words of a column on the Lakers written by Kevin Ding of the Orange County Register and using it on air.

Brady on D&C: Pats have earned it

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady joined the Dennis & Callahan show Monday morning for his weekly appearance on WEEI's Patriots Monday. The Patriots closed out the regular season Sunday with a 38-7 win over the Dolphins, allowing several backups to get playing time in the rout.

"I think we got what we wanted out of it," Brady said. "A bunch of guys got opportunities to play. ... It was really a great win."

Brady noted the play of quarterback Brian Hoyer and receiver Taylor Price, who made big plays in the first games of the season, as well as receiver/punt returner Julian Edelman. "That's what this team is made of," Brady said. "It's a bunch of guys who are trying to go out there and give everything they've got. And I think that's what we've done, that's what worked, and that's what we'll continue to do."

Brady said he's confident Hoyer could step in at...

Rex Ryan: 'I think we're gonna win it'

After the Jets beat up the Bills by a 38-7 count in their regular-season finale, New York coach Rex Ryan reiterated his belief that the Jets will win the Super Bowl. Though the team's 11-5 record resulted in the No. 6 seed in the AFC and a trip to Indianapolis for the wild card round of the playoffs, Ryan's confidence remained undiminished.

"I was excited last year. I thought we’d win it last year. I think we’re gonna win it this year, so we’ll see. Regardless of who we play, we think we’re better than any team out there. We have to go prove it, though," Ryan told reporters. "We want to win the Super Bowl. That’s what our fans want and all that. They’re not happy just getting to the playoffs, even though it’s a heck of an accomplishment to get here. That’s not what we signed up for. I said the day I took this job that I came here to win Super Bowls. That’s the truth...

Patriots will choose 17th overall in draft
By: DJ Bean

With the Raiders capping their regular season with a 31-10 victory over the Chiefs in Kansas City, they became one of two teams to finish the season at 8-8. Their record means the Patriots, who received Oakland's first-rounder in the Richard Seymour deal, will choose 17th overall.

The Raiders, along with the 8-8 Jaguars, are tied for the 17th-worst record. Luckily for the Patriots, one of the teams with a worse record than the Raiders, the 7-9 Seahawks, made the playoffs and will therefore choose no higher than 21st overall. Strength of schedule is the first tiebreaker for teams with identical records, and as a result, the Jaguars, whose opponents combined for a .453 winning percentage, qualify for the higher pick due to the .468 winning percentage of the Raiders' opponents.

The Patriots also hold their own first round pick, as well as the Panthers' second-round pick, which is No. 33 overall. The Pats flipped...

Pierce sprains ankle in win over Toronto

Late in the Celtics' 93-79 win over Toronto Sunday, Paul Pierce landed awkwardly after an open-court dunk and sprained his right ankle. Pierce hobbled back up the court before calling for a timeout to come out of the game. Pierce then went back to the locker room before the game concluded, but Celtics coach Doc Rivers said he doesn't think it will be that serious. It will be a quick turnaround for Pierce as the Celtics host Minnesota on Monday.
