Julien: Belichick 'reached out' by showing up

TAMPA — Bruins coach Claude Julien said Tuesday he appreciates Patriots coach Bill Belcihick attending his team's home playoff games in the series with the Lightning and showing his support by rallying the fans on the video board high above the ice.

"I think what he's done is reached out to us by doing what he's done," Julien said on the off day before Game 6 Wednesday night at St. Pete Times Forum. "I think coaches understand -- and I would be the same way -- I would never dare call him or any of those guys when they're in the playoffs. But I'd certainly be there to show my support, which I did the Patriots when it was time and I've done it for the Red Sox.

"I've been there a few times. And I'm a big fan of those Boston teams, the Celtics included. And I think it's about showing support. You don't need to necessarily talk unless somebody really needs to talk to you. And I think if I reached out to him myself, he'd...

Boychuk says he's good for Game 6
By: DJ Bean

TAMPA -- On Tuesday, Bruins coach Claude Julien used the same word -- "fine" -- to describe defenseman Johnny Boychuk, who left Game 5 of the Eastern Conference finals a little over halfway through the third period after hit from Tampa Bay forward Steve Downie.

"Nothing has changed," Julien said. "He's fine."

Boychuk himself said that he will play in Wednesday's Game 6 and that despite feeling a bit woozy following the hit that earned Downie a boarding penalty, he knew that he was OK.

"I was a little foggy, but then after I got off the ice, I felt totally fine," Boychuk said Tuesday. "Even when I was on the ice, they just wanted to make sure I was OK before I even tried to skate. I didn't really want to fall."

Downie was not disciplined by the league for the hit, and Boychuk took a respectable approach when asked his feelings on it.

"I saw the hit," he said...

Lackey eyes May 31 rehab, June 5 return

According to reports out of Cleveland, Red Sox starter John Lackey threw 40 pitches (all fastballs) in his first bullpen session since receiving a cortisone shot and landing on the DL for a strained right elbow on May 16. The right-hander, according to the reports, is hoping to make a rehab start on May 31 and then return to the Red Sox rotation on June 5.

Lackey is 2-5 with an 8.01 ERA in seven starts this year. His last start came on May 11, when he allowed nine runs in 6 2/3 innings against the Blue Jays.

Okajima clears waivers, will join PawSox

Red Sox left-hander Hideki Okajima, who was designated for assignment on Friday in order to clear a spot on the 40-man and major league rosters for newly acquired left-hander Franklin Morales, cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Pawtucket. Okajima had the right to elect free agency (and forgo the remainder of his $1.75 million salary for 2011) given his service time, but instead accepted the assignment and will remain in the only organization for whom he's played since coming to Major League Baseball.

Okajima was 1-0 with a 4.32 ERA for the Sox in the majors this year. He pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings in Pawtucket to open the year.

Though he admitted disappointment when the Sox designated him last week, the 35-year-old said that he did not regret his decision to re-sign with the Sox.

Francona: Pedroia's slump not health-related

Red Sox manager Terry Francona, in his weekly interview on The Big Show, said that second baseman Dustin Pedroia is fine after having been removed from Tuesday's game over concern about his left foot -- the same appendage that he fractured last season, and that still has a screw in it. Pedroia is not in the lineup on Tuesday -- Drew Sutton will start at second for the Sox -- but going forward, the Sox expect that the three-time All-Star is fine.

"He’s OK. He popped his head in about an hour ago, kind of gave me a thumb’s up," said Francona. "I think he gave us all a scare last night, including himself. He went around the bag, kind of slipped – it was wet – kind of turned that ankle. He’s got that screw in there. It gave him a little zinger, kind of a bolt of lightning up that leg. Obviously, we needed to get him out of there because of that.

"Their doctors came over to have a look at him right away...
