Lackey turns in three solid innings

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Making his second spring training start, John Lackey allowed three hits and no runs in three innings of work in the Red Sox' 8-2 win over the Mets Thursday afternoon at Tradition Field. Of Lackey's nine outs, eight of them came on ground balls.

“I’m on time, yeah. I’m not getting too far ahead of myself or anything,” Lackey said. “My two-seamer was pretty good today. I was happy with that. I got a lot of ground balls. Some of the other pitches aren’t quite there, yet. We’ve still got some work to do, for sure. … I don’t think I threw a changeup in the game. I need to incorporate that a little bit more the next couple of starts. Slider and cutter thing wasn’t that great today. still got some work done.”

Another positive Lackey took away was the opportunity to work with catcher Victor Martinez.

Bay: Boos a 'little harsh'

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Upon stepping into the batter’s box in second inning of Thursday's game against the Red Sox at Tradition Field, Jason Bay was announced to the fans at the spring training home of the Mets and was peppered with a smattering of boos. Bay’s reaction? “I thought it was a little harsh,” the former Red Sox outfielder said with a grin. When asked how he would classify the reception, Bay explained, “It was lukewarm, at best.”

Upon hearing the explanation, Mets third baseman David Wright yelled over, “For everything you brought to that city, they should cheer for you.” Bay seemed genuinely amused — while still somewhat surprised — coming away from the re-introduction to his former teammates with an understanding of the situation.

“They travel well,” Bay said of the Red Sox fans in attendance. “I didn’t expect...

BC's season over with loss to UVA

Boston College's Rakim Sanders scored a game-high 22 points, but the Eagles' season came to a disappointing end with a 68-62 upset by Virginia in the first round of the ACC tournament Thursday afternoon in Greensboro, N.C. Reggie Jackson added 18 points and nine rebounds for eighth-seeded BC, which finishes a frustrating season at 15-16.

Ninth-seeded Virginia (15-15) came in having lost nine straight games and missing leading scorer Sylven Landesberg (academic suspension). But the Cavaliers, sparked by Sammy Zeglinski's 21 points, took a seven-point halftime lead and maintained control throughout the final 20 minutes. Virginia advances to play Duke Friday afternoon.

BC led by six points midway through the first period, but Virginia closed the period on a 17-4 run to take a 34-27 lead into the locker room. The closest BC got after that was three points, at 49-46 with 8:55 left after a short jumper from Dallas Elmore...
