According to ESPN.com, there are "strong indications" that the momentum is building towards a deal between the Twins and 2009 American League MVP Joe Mauer. The report stated that Mauer's agent, Ron Shapiro, was seen on Sunday afternoon in the airport in Fort Myers, a city in which both the Red Sox and Twins reside. While Mauer would become the object of a huge free-agent bidding war, multiple industry sources expect that a deal between him and the Twins will get done. Mauer, who comes from St. Paul, Minn., was taken by the Twins as the top overall pick in the 2001 draft.
FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The Marlins returned Rule 5 draftee Jorge Jimenez to the Red Sox on Sunday. The 25-year-old third baseman had been selected by the Astros in the Rule 5 draft on Dec. 10, and then was traded to Florida as part of a deal for reliever Matt Lindstrom. But the Marlins decided that they could not keep the infielder on their major league roster all season, and so sent him back to Boston for $25,000 (the Sox having received $50,000 from Houston when Jimenez was selected).
Jimiez comes back to a Red Sox organization for whom he has performed beyond expectations when he was taken in the 16th round of the 2006 draft. In 2009, he hit .289/.366/.422/.787 with 13 homers and 87 RBIs in Double A Portland. Though not a slugger, he has always shown a good offensive approach at the plate. Still, he has never played about Double-A, which made a spot on a big league roster a longshot.
