No one is safe from OMF's Whiner Line.
Glenn, Lou, and Christian talk about Clay Buchholz' latest meltdown, and what's up with his Clubhouse Playlist?

These videos of members of the armed forces reuniting with their loved ones get me every time. And this one, with the dad pulling off the surprise right there at home plate like this? It just hits me in the solar plexus and has me feeling all the feels.

Semper Fi, Marine. And welcome home from a grateful nation.

As Ryan Hannable mentioned earlier on It Is What It Is, Buffalo Bills coach Rex Ryan and his new defensive assistant/brother Rob gave an interview to Jenny Vrentas of MMQB. And if you were thinking that maybe Rex’s inability to win anything or Rob’s years of abysmal, historic failure as the coordinator for the Saints has humbled him any or convinced them to shut their cake holes, you’re obviously not familiar with how the Ryans operate. Neither is capable of putting a sock in it, and no amount of awfulness can convince them they are not the best coaches in the business.

Among the highlights:

  • Rob, on being in the same division as Bill Belichick: “He’s not going to be able to watch us coach for much longer, I don’t think. But hopefully he can see this one, because we have got big plans. Bring Belichick on. We got him.”
  • Rob, on facing the Patriots: “I know one thing, we are going to beat them. We are together, we’re going to beat the best.”
  • On the league-worst defense Rob was in charge of in New Orleans: “[A]t the end of the day, the last two years in New Orleans were a waste of time for me. … I need to be in a multiple system. I was hired to be in a multiple system in New Orleans, and I did a damn good job and got fired for it.”
  • Rex, talking tough: “Well, we never lost a fight in our life. Ever. And we ain’t losing this one. And that’s a true statement. Not just because we are badasses — because we are, individually — but collectively, it’s a lot different. To this day, no man is going to whip me. Why? Because I’ve got my brother with me.”
  • Rob, taking personal responsibility: “I am not going to sit on my hands, like I did in New Orleans. The biggest mistake I think I made in New Orleans was sitting on my hands and collecting a paycheck, instead of going in, knowing it was wrong and fixing it.”
  • Rob, on his future: “I did the best job I could. I’ll be better anywhere else. (Pause). I’ll be great anywhere else.”
  • Rex, on Rob’s coaching tree: “Rob is under Bill Belichick. Well, Bill Belichick, this just in, pretty damn good football coach.”
  • Rob on Rob: “I am great.”

So in summary, the Ryans are great. None of their failings are their own. They’re the best coaches in the world, not to mention the biggest badasses. Swagger, brag, yap, bombast, yadda yadda, no man can defeat me, trash talk, blah bitty blah blah.

Oh, and as always, Bill Belichick is living so deep inside their heads that he ought to be paying a fricking mortgage. And this year we get the added fun of seeing two Ryans eliminated from the playoffs by Thanksgiving.

ESPNDez Bryant might not have been watching the Scripps National Spelling Bee live, but the Dallas Cowboys wide receiver quickly became a huge fan of co-winner Nihar Janga.

Janga channeled his inner Bryant, throwing up the “X” after being named co-champion with Jairam Hathwar on Thursday night.

This is just so typical. It’s everything that’s wrong with sports AND with society these days.

The Scripps Spelling Bee used to have a code. Unwritten rules that said you don’t disrespect your opponent. You don’t showboat. When you got a word right, you acted like you’ve been there.

Now, it’s all about the individual. It’s about drawing attention to yourself. It’s putting your own self-aggrandizement ahead of the English language and really hard, non-phonetic spellings. Some are actually arguing the sport needs that sort of gimmick. They say Spelling Bees have gotten stale, and the gesturing and the dancing will appeal to a younger audience. But I’m not buying it.

Back in my day, we played the Bee game with dignity and class. We put complex words, ambiguous vowel sounds, digraphs and diphthongs first. And if an opponent danced in your face, you drilled him in the ass with a string of consonants that made him screaming onomatopoeia all the way to the hospital.

So thanks for trying to ruin the Sport of Kings, Nihar Janga. Just like your hero Dez Bryant is doing to football. And forgetting that you’re supposed to be a role model for all the younger Bee fans who are supposed to look up to. Lord, I hate to think what the game is going to look like in 20 years.

Gary Tanguay fills in for Dino and they talk about Kirk's podcast with Pete Sheppard.

If you’re disappointed you can’t get your football fix at Patriots OTAs this week because less important things like work, school and life are getting in the way, join the club. If you’re worried that Julian Edelman isn’t there, either (along with guys like Rob Gronkowski, Danny Amendola and Dion Lewis), I’m with you.

So instead, I offer you the next best thing. If this Minitron video doesn’t keep you pumped up for the season or convince you that despite the surgeries on his foot Edelman is coming back and bringing hell with him, then you have no soul. Thanks to the folks at Pats Nation Video Page for this. We needed it.
