– According to a Harris Poll conducted last month, the Broncos have replaced the Cowboys as the most popular team in the NFL. The Patriots rank eighth.

Although the Cowboys are surging, improving to 5-1 with Sunday’s victory over the Seahawks in Seattle, they dropped from the top spot — which they held for six straight years — to No. 4. The Cowboys had finished first or second in 12 of the previous 13 annual polls.

The Broncos are the reigning AFC champions and have the league’s second-longest home sellout streak (behind Washington), having sold out every home game since the start of the 1970 season.

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

The Giants are No. 2, followed by the Packers. After the Cowboys are the Steelers, Seahawks (jumping from 12th last year), 49ers, Patriots, Bears and Saints.

The company polled 2,543 adults (1,275 who identified themselves as people who followed pro football) from Sept. 10-17.

– Tuesday’s European Championship qualifying soccer match between Albania and host Serbia was testy from the start, due to ethnic and political tensions between the two nations.

Albanian fans were banned from the stadium, but apparently one Albanian found a way to stir up trouble, sending in a drone carrying a “Greater Albania” flag — with images that are offensive to Serbs — that flew low over the field, delaying the game in the 41st minute. When Serbian player Stefan Mitrovic grabbed the flag, Albanian players responded angrily and took the flag from him, That ignited a brawl as fans ran onto the field and attacked the Albanian players.

The scoreless game was called off just before halftime, as Albanian players raced off the field while fans threw objects at them.

According to reports out of Serbia, the brother of Albanian Prime Minister Edie Rama was detained at the stadium due to suspicion that he orchestrated the stunt, although he later was released and sent home.

– The NCAA is allowing Cincinnati’s Mount St. Joseph University to reschedule its season-opening women’s basketball game to the early date of Nov. 2 so that freshman Lauren Hill, who is suffering from an inoperable brain tumor, can play.

Hill was diagnosed last November with diffused intrinsic pentane gleoma while a senior at a high school in Greendale, Illinois. She was able to play basketball following chemotherapy and radiation treatments, but her prognosis is not good, as the brain cancer has a zero percent survival rate.

The university moved up its opener against Hiram College in hopes that Hill would have the strength to play in one college game, as per her request.

“Why stop?” Hill said. “Why give up on life? Why not keep going?”

Said Mount St. Joseph’s coach Dan Benjamin: “She’s a special person. This girl is so strong, she’s dealing with death and all she’s thinking about is everyone else. Her team first, her family first, and just to give her that one last wish would be incredible for our program and our players.”

ON THIS DAY TRIVIA (answer below): On Oct. 15, 1986, the Red Sox beat the Angels, 8-1, in Game 7 of the ALCS, completing a comeback from a 3-1 series deficit. Who was the game’s winning pitcher?

QUOTE OF THE DAY: “This [Jets] team, they’re 1-5, they’re not very good. Geno Smith, he stinks, Michael Vick doesn’t want to play, they haven’t practiced well. This team has lost a lot of players, young guys in the secondary. Tom [Brady] can really eat up this defense. But just knowing Rex [Ryan], and just knowing how much he dislikes the Patriots, I think this game will be a lot more competitive than what people think.” – NBC Sports NFL analyst Rodney Harrison, during his weekly Tuesday appearance on Middays with MFB, previewing Thursday’s Patriots-Jets game

STAT OF THE DAY: 44 – Minutes of the preseason game the Celtics and Nets will play Sunday, an experiment by the NBA to try shaving four minutes off the game

‘NET RESULTS (mobile users, check the website to see the videos): The Giants beat the Cardinals as Brandon Crawford scores the winning run in the 10th inning on Randy Choate’s throwing error.

Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas clubs over the railing to catch a foul popup against the Orioles.

The Dude Perfect trick-shot crew takes to the ice with help from Stars forward (and former Bruin) Tyler Seguin.

Blake Griffin and other NBA players discuss Nicholas Sparks’ “The Best of Me” in Jimmy Kimmel’s Basketball Book Club.
