— Dale Earnhardt Jr. announced on Wednesday he plans to retire from NASCAR after the 2017 season.

Earnhardt held an hourlong press conference announcement from the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series in North Carolina and said he will remain involved in the sport after he hangs it up.

“I accomplished way more than I ever dreamed, way more than I ever thought I’d accomplish,” Earnhardt said. “So I’m good, you know. I’m good on that front. I’m so blessed and fortunate on what I was able to achieve but I’m very sad because it’s definitely disappointing for a lot of people to wake up to that news this morning.”

“I don’t see myself really detaching from NASCAR,” Earnhardt continued. “My intention is still to be involved in the sport on some level. … Even after this season is over, you have not seen the last of me on the race track. But more than that, I want to be a part of the future of the sport for years to come.”

Earnhardt Jr.’s career began at age 24 in 1999. He has won 26 times in 603 starts, including two Daytona 500’s.

— In the first quarter of the Rockets’ series-clinching Game 5 win over the Thunder on Tuesday, Houston owner Leslie Alexander caused a small incident when he left his courtside seat to yell at referee Bill Kennedy.

The incident lasted only a few seconds and it seemed Alexander was arguing about a call that wasn’t made. He stood up and walked over to Kennedy, who was standing on the court watching a play, stood behind Kennedy and said something to him. He then turned around and walked back to his seat. Hakeem Olajuwon, who was sitting next to Alexander, tried to grab his arm as he stood up but Alexander was undeterred.

Alexander refused to discuss the incident and said at halftime he “can’t talk about it” and was “upset, really upset.”

NBA spokesman Mike Bass issued a statement about this after the game, saying “an investigation is underway.”

James Harden, however, didn’t see Alexander but thought what he did was funny.

“He’s just the coolest guy on Earth,” Harden said. “I would have probably ran over there and tried to help him.”

QUOTE OF THE DAY: “I was diagnosed with a concussion and just going through the protocol with that I was trying to be safe with it. There’s a point where you kinda have to worry about the next 20 years rather than this year.” — Brandon Carlo, on the injury that kept him out of the Bruins playoff series
