Sepp Blatter

Sepp Blatter

As expected, Sepp Blatter was re-elected as president of FIFA for a fifth term during Friday’s election in Zurich, although there was enough opposition that Blatter did not win on the first vote.

Blatter had 133 votes to 73 for Prince Ali bin al-Hussein of Jordan. Because no candidate won two-thirds of the vote, there was to have been a second vote in which the winner would only need a majority. However, Prince Ali, a FIFA vice president for the past four years, conceded defeat and withdrew.

Two FIFA vice presidents and a recently elected executive committee remember remained in custody during Friday’s election. They are fighting extradition to the United States, where they would face corruption charges related to tournaments held in North America.

Blatter denied having any role in the alleged bribery, blaming others for embarrassing the sport and saying it was impossible to be responsible for everyone’s behavior.

Blatter, 79, has been president for 17 years.

Let’s review for a moment, shall we? We’re two months into the Red Sox season, and when they were tempting us with brief flashes of offensive brilliance early on, they couldn’t pitch. During the rare moments they showed they could pitch, their bats turned to the cardboard tubes in the middle of a roll of wrapping paper. They are rapidly starting to swirl the drain, and if something doesn’t come along to change things it won’t take two flushes to get them down. But it will take half a can of air freshener before anyone can come in after them.

Enter Eduardo Rodriguez. Only 22 and making his major league debut, he goes on the road and holds a good Texas lineup to three hits and zero runs in 7 2/3 shutout innings. He struck out seven. He consistently threw in the 95-97 mph range and not only threw 68 out of 105 pitches for strikes, he did something we haven’t seen here in a while. He pulled a little piece of sorcery in which opposing batters swing at the pitch and actually miss it.

This would be the part where you read all that and the person doing the writing warns you we shouldn’t get ahead of ourselves here. Where you’re reminded it’s only one game. Where some discerning know-it-all with a lifetime of experience and a healthy dose of perspective offers a history lesson of all the guys who looked like the Next Big Thing but had the lifespan of a mayfly so don’t get too excited about Rodriguez too soon.

Lucky for you I’m not that guy. To hell with perspective. Experience can go piss up a rope. Screw waiting to get excited. I am all in on this kid. I’m pushing my emotional stack into the middle of the table and letting it ride. I am getting in on the ground floor of Eduardo Rodriguez Mania and suggest you jump in with me.

Why not? The worst thing that could happen right now to the Red Sox is we don’t get excited about E-Rod (copyright, Thornography blog, all rights reserved). Worse than being just garden variety bad, the 2015 Sox are about to hit the beginning of June irrelevant. There are a few mad about how gawdawful they are, but I’m starting to get the impression we are an ever-decreasing minority. Most people are seeing what a dog’s breakfast they are, shrugging their shoulders and prepared to spend the summer focusing on “Mad Max,” the beach, cookouts and wicked sexy singles by my pop music wife, Katharine McPhee.

There are times when it’s not about being rational or reasonable or even having a shred of common sense. It’s about finding something to get excited about and allowing yourself to get excited about it. And now is one of those times. I’m declaring my unequivocal mancrush for Eduardo Rodriguez because I need to. Now more than ever, I need a hero.

My only regret is I didn’t get one of those No. 52 Yoenis Cespedes home jerseys when they were practically giving them away.

Dino, Gerry and Kirk discuss the Red Sox decision to sit down their slumping slugger.

Let me get this straight. Tom Brady was sloppy seconds behind Eli and Peyton Manning on that Season 6 episode of “Entourage”? And we’re just finding this out now from Turtle?

On the one hand, obviously I’m proud of Tom for being so gracious and accommodating. Leave it to the privileged little rich kids with the celebrity dad to completely big time the entire production, back out of their commitment at the last second and leave everyone hanging. Like they had something more important to do. But typical of the Manning brothers that their word means nothing.

But nevertheless, I’m not sure Brady did the right thing. Landing him for this role was the casting coup of the 21st century. It’s as if when the History Channel did “The Bible” they got Moses to play himself. But the thought that the cast and crew had the Mannings as their first choice is an insult to all that is decent and just. It’s just lucky for them TB12 is the man he is because if he asked my advice (and I’m sure that day will come) I would have recommended he tell them that if they love that family so much, go ask Cooper to bail them out. And to remind them that he has more Super Bowls than the whole Manning family combined.

But leave it to Tom to come to the rescue again. He’s a clutch performer on the field and off.
