Right before the show began, news broke that Patriots owner Robert Kraft was on the stand at the murder trial for former tight end Aaron Hernandez. We heard some of the opening questions and answers from Kraft, and wondered if this meant that Bill Belichick would also be called. Cory Simms is a proud heckler, and people have a problem with that? Why wouldn’t he be? He’s not only carrying on the noble tradition of heckling, he’s excelling at it. Some guys can work their whole life trying to develop their heckling game and never make it past peewees or mites. But he has made it. He believe in himself, honed his craft and heckled himself all the way to The Show. To local Canadian Junior B hockey. He’s living The Dream.

And you have to admire the way he’s owning it. If the hockey moms don’t like his style, they should stick to crosswords and knitting. And if the young boys men can’t handle it, they should stick to tiddlywinks. See, that’s the kind of carefully crafted putdown and clever, distinctive style that got him from obscurity all the way to heckling for the Caps.

If this Cory works hard and keeps believing in himself. who knows? Maybe someday he can afford to go heckle at pro games. By the looks of things, he’ll only need one ticket.

There are few social trends in America as irritating as the scourge of the Ostentatious, Attention-Whoring, Sporting Event Public Display of Engagement. The O.A.W.S.E.P.D.E. has ruined not only the simple pleasure of taking in a game unencumbered by some jackass trying to impress everybody; it’s also helping to destroy the simple, wholesome good that was courtship.

As hard as it might be to believe, there was a time when these things were done in private. It was about two people with genuine feelings for each other and one would find a moment alone and ask the other to make a lifetime commit. It was simple and beautiful and didn’t require anyone else around to record it on an iPhone and then upload it to YouTube.

Now if you just want to make it a sincere and personal moment, you run the risk of your S.O. thinking there’s something wrong with your relationship because you didn’t rent out the Fenway message board and demand the people in Section 14 give you a standing ovation. So thanks for wrecking both sporting events and romance for generations of men to come, you grandstanding twits.

OK, end of rant. Now I’d like to make an exception for this guy. Because there’s something about the innocent purity of a Wrestlemania 31 engagement. Call me a softie, but having your nuptials blessed by The Rock, Triple H and Ronda Rousey I’m sure that he and the lovely Oceana will have a long storybook marriage. God bless, you two crazy kids.
