What new devilry is this? Is bringing birds of prey on the subway some kind of new hipster hotness I’m just now finding out about because I only travel those rolling, underground bad neighborhoods in dire emergencies? Is it some kind of trendy, live-action “Pokemon Go” with birds instead of cartoon characters? Or at these supposed to be some kind of service animal? Seeing eye birds? Comfort owls? Seriously, what gives?

As if Tunnel Life isn’t miserable enough already with smelly winos, noisy high school kids, crazy bag ladies and belligerent street criminals trying to stare you down, now we’re going to have pretentious, pampered little rich kids subjecting us to their filthy little avian friends to deal with. Great.

And don’t let these little pixies pretend for a hot second they do this because they love the birds. If they did, they’d release these raptors into the wild, free to go live up in a tree and cough up mouse carcasses the way God intended. Forcing them into a subway car is plain and simple captivity, for all involved.

As far as I’m concerned, there’s only one excuse for bringing an owl onto a train. And these guys are not nearly cool enough to be accepted at Hogwarts.

Boston HeraldDespite moving more than 1,000 miles from Boston, an ex-mob boss remained an ardent supporter of the New England Patriots while in witness protection.

Members of an Atlanta-based Patriots fan club tell WPRI-TV in Providence, Rhode Island, that Francis “Cadillac Frank” Salemme  attended at least three of the group’s game watching parties under an assumed name during the past two seasons. …

John Gray, president of the Atlanta fan club says he feels bad for Salemme’s victims, but “when you’re a Patriots fan — you’re family.”

Salemme was arrested last week in Connecticut on charges he murdered a witness in 1993.

My dear, sainted mother was one of those people that believe there was some good in all people. She may have raised a baby boy who grew up to be a determined, grudge-holding cynic, filled with resentment who is convinced of the irredeemable badness in the human soul. But not her. She had a genius for finding the good in others, and one of her most-used catch phrases when talking about some incorrigible asshat or other was “Oh, he means well.”

Well, after reading this, maybe St. Irene of Dorchester was right. Maybe there is some good in all of us. I mean, Cadillac Frank Salemme is a vicious, heartless, blood-thirsty thug who planned murders with Whitey Bulger, once blew up a mob informant’s attorney’s car, shook down film crews working in Boston and Providence, did federal time for extortion, racketeering and loansharking, and just last week, while in the Witness Protection Program, he was charged with the 1993 murder of an unnamed witness.

But on the other hand, he did keep rooting for the Patriots. Sure, he’s got blood on his hands, but he was standing side-by-side with other Pats fans at viewing parties, cheering on Malcolm Butler’s interception and —

Never mind. I can’t finish that thought. The fans of New England don’t need him in our ranks. Even my mom wouldn’t find anything to like about this maniac. If there’s any justice in the world, he’ll live out the rest of his life behind bars, and hopefully as a Ravens fan.

Marcell Dareus

Marcell Dareus

At Bills training camp on Wednesday, defensive tackle Marcell Dareus talked with reporters about his four-game suspension. According to Dareus, the suspension stems from a missed drug test — which contradicts reports Tuesday that it was for a positive marijuana test.

“I really don’t have much to say. Words really don’t mean anything now,” Dareus said after practice Wednesday. “It’s all action. And that’s what I’m going to do. I’m going to come back and do the best I can.”

Dareus missed the first game of last season because of a suspension for a violation of the NFL’s substance-abuse policy. The violation stemmed from May of 2014 when the Alabama State Police arrested Dareus for possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia. Dareus also made headlines when he crashed his Jaguar into a tree near a busy suburban intersection in the spring of 2014. In April of 2015, the misdemeanor charges were dropped because he reached a plea agreement.

On the field, Dareus had only two sacks last season, but in September the Bills signed Dareus, who was the third overall pick in 2011, to a six-year contract extension worth a reported $104 million.

“We’re going to hold him accountable from here on out. And he’s going to hold himself accountable,” Bills general manager Doug Whaley said. “He’s got to take a step himself. And it’s got to be on him.”

Added coach Rex Ryan: “There’s going to be some people that are cynical of him. There’s going to be people that will never give him the benefit of the doubt anymore. But for the majority of people, it’s more of a show-me thing. And I believe that moving forward this young man will learn from this experience and become a better person for it.

“We all care a great deal for Marcell. We want to see this be a thing that’s behind him once and for all, that this never happens again to him.”

Dareus will miss games against the Ravens, Jets, Cardinals and Patriots. The Bills defense could desperately use Dareus because rookies Shaq Lawson and Reggie Ragland have suffered major injuries and veteran Manny Lawson reportedly faces a one-game suspension.

Corbin Bryant is expected to start in place of Dareus. Last season, Bryant started nine of the final 10 games because of a season-ending knee injury to Kyle Williams.

And so the tangled web that Ryan Lochte wove begins to unravel.

I’m not one to say “I told you so,” which is to say I am the one to say, “I told you so” every chance I get. And when the Thorn Star went out on a limb, against his own country and willing to call shenanigans against a fellow American because I could not buy what Lochte was selling, I was right. I got in on the ground floor of Lochte Lied, Inc. and the investment is already paying dividends.

While Lochte’s teammates/fellow (alleged) armed-robbery victims Jack Conger and Gunnar Bentz are being detained by Brazilian authorities for further questioning, he is back in the States changing his story. That traffic stop where their cab got pulled over by gunmen posing as cops has become they stopped for gas and got held up outside the men’s room. That cocked gun pressed to his forehead is now a gun pointed in his general direction. Olympic Village security video shows the swimmers causally coming back to the residences, and the time stamps support none of Lochte’s claims.

Now we have a report of surveillance video from the gas station showing one of them kicking a bathroom door in and fighting with a security guard? Ryan Lochte’s story doesn’t hold water (pun completely intentional) and his inconsistencies are being exposed, just as I predicted they would. Because he too much of an empty-headed dope to keep a lie straight.

And as always when a conspiracy begins to come apart, questions get answered. Others spring up. The mind plays tricks on you. You play tricks back. It’s like unraveling a big, cable knit sweater, that someone keeps knitting … and knitting … and knitting …
