Celtics president of baketball operations Danny Ainge joined The Big Show for his weekly interview and talked about the struggles the team had recently, losing three of four games before beating Indiana on Wednesday. Ainge said that he thought the problem lay with the starters, particularly offensively. "Our problems offensively are our starters. It's our big four," Ainge said. "We had 18 points [Wednesday night] against Indiana, who's not a great defensive team with nine minutes to go in the second quarter until Jeff Green goes off for 17. A guy who comes in and doesn't know our stuff carries us. Those [four] guys have got it done. Those guys are the ones that have been struggling offensively."
Ainge said he doesn't think Rajon Rondo is 100 percent and that it has contributed to his slump. "He's not playing as well as he's capable of but I do believe that he's not 100 percent physically," Ainge said. He also disputed the notion that the Celtics are more vulnerable defensively without Kendrick Perkins. "That's not against our centers. That's against our guards," Ainge said. "Even when we had Perkins. If you remember the Phoenix game where [Marcin] Gortat had 25 [points] and Robin Lopez had 14 and they were just dunking the ball on the pick and roll. That's team defense. That's not scoring on our centers. That's bad team defense. When guys are getting wide open dunks that's typically not the center's fault."
As for the return of Shaquille O'Neal, Ainge said that the center had a setback but was with the team on their three-game road trip. "A week ago we reevaluated and readjusted," Ainge said. "He came back a weeks ago with the hope of playing by now. I think there was a little bit of a setback. He's with the team on the trip just to get some shootaround and some practice time in. It's just day to day. He feels a little bit of discomfort there. We feel that same way, that he'll be fine. It's just a matter of when."
