The University of Rhode Island's NIT run came to an end Tuesday night with a 68-67 overtime loss to North Carolina in the semifinals at Madison Square Garden. Deon Thompson had 16 points and 13 rebounds for the Tar Heels, who will play Dayton in Thursday's championship game. Keith Cothran had a game-high 23 points for the Rams (26-10).
The game ended with a little controversy, as URI's Lamonte Ulmer grabbed a rebound with five seconds left and started heading upcourt for a final shot. But he fell after a Carolina player rolled into his legs, and the ball rolled harmlessly away as time expired. Both coaches said they felt a foul should have been called.
