FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Red Sox pitcher Boof Bonser threw 56 pitches (42 strikes) in a simulated outing against minor leaguers. He is next slated to pitch on Saturday in a minor league game at the Red Sox training facility in Fort Myers, meaning that he will not be traveling with the club for its exhibition contest against the Nationals in Washington that day. That, in turn, suggests that Bonser could begin the year on the disabled list.
Bonser was slowed down for a couple of days last week after experiencing stiffness in his groin in a start against the Rays last Tuesday. While he is working back from that injury, pitching coach John Farrell also pointed out that he continues to rebuild arm strength after undergoing surgery on his right shoulder labrum 13 months ago. As such, it would not be surprising if the team elected to have him start the year in the minors so that he can continue that process in a controlled environment.
Bonser's fastball was clocked at 89-91 mph in his simulated outing on Monday.
