Red Sox infielder Kevin Youkilis was a guest of the Dale & Holley show Tuesday morning. Speaking from spring training in Fort Myers, Fla., Youkilis said the players are tiring of talking about the team's alleged defensive deficiencies last year and the focus on improving that this season. "We've focused a lot [in interviews] on the defense this year," he said. "Everywhere you hear is defense, defense, defense. I think a lot of us are getting [tired] of hearing about defense, because we like to talk about our offense, too.
"A lot of us, we only play the field so we can hit," he joked. "We only try as hard as we can to play well in the field so we can go up and hit. We don't want to give up any extra outs so we have to sit in the field."
Youkilis said he was pleasantly surprised by the team's offseason acquisition of John Lackey. "I definitely didn't see that one coming, but it was a great thing to sign him," he said, noting that pitching depth is crucial. "If our guys stay healthy, we've got a lot of good pitching out there that can take us a long way."
Youkilis has been impressed with young shortstop Jose Iglesias at spring training. "He's got unbelievable hands," Youkilis said. "A lot guys think he looks like Omar Vizquel, which isn't too bad of a player to emulate. ... He's very good defensively. His hands are ridiculously smooth and quick."
Youkilis said he is planning a charity event on his website (www.youkskids.org) in which people can vote for what facial hair the player will sport the first week of the season. "It's between goatee, clean shaven, Fu Manchu and a mustache," he explained. "We're hoping the mustache thing doesn't get voted on that well. ... Everyone keeps telling me that's going to probably win, so I'm a little worried."
