New Red Sox third baseman Adrian Beltre stopped by with Dennis & Callahan at spring training in Fort Myers to talk about his assimilation to the team. Asked about his relationship with the player he is replacing, Mike Lowell, Beltre said there is no awkwardness. "I've known Lowell since the minor leagues, when we played against [each other]," he said. "We always talked when we played against each other. We talked when we got here. We have everything clear, and we know what to expect. I think we have a really good situation right now."
Beltre said he expressed concern about Lowell when the Red Sox first showed interest. Said Beltre: "The first question when the Red Sox called my agent and said that they were interested in me, I said, 'What about Mike Lowell?' That was the first question. Because I know Lowell's a player, and I'm a big fan of him — great person. When the situation came up and they told me he had some injuries and stuff like that, and he probably wouldn't play third anyways if he came here, that made it a little easier for me."
Beltre's decision to accept a one-year deal to play in Boston was made because he's tired of missing the playoffs. "It wasn't that tough [a decision]," he said. "Financially, I'm pretty set for now. I just took my chance to come to a team that had a really chance to win the World Series."
