Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia made an appearance with Dennis & Callahan at spring training and said the Sox offense will surprise critics. “This year everyone is doubting our offense, so that motivates you, and not only me but all the other guys in the lineup have something to prove,” he said. “It’s going to be fun proving everybody wrong.”
Pedroia said the team's defensive woes last season may be a little overstated as well. "I know at the beginning of the year we had a tough time, but at the end of the year I thought we were fine," he said. "During the year you have your bumps in the road, but every team does. I think we’ve shored that up this year. We our going to be a really good defensive team, we are going to pitch great and we are going to surprise a lot of people offensively."
On new shortstop Marco Scutaro, Pedroia said: "He’s a guy with a lot of energy. He plays the game the right way. The big difference I saw yesterday is he’s always under control. He thinks the game out before the play happens and he’s a baseball player."
On the Mike Lowell situation, Pedroia said: "Mike Lowell is my best friend on the team. He’s helped me out a ton and everyone knows what kind of guy he is. He’s the best. You see the stuff he’s going through and everyone is pulling for him. Right now, he’s on our team and I plan on him being with us. Whatever situation you are given you've got to deal with it the best you can and have a great attitude doing it."
On last season's disappointing ending, Pedroia said: "Our goal every year is to try and win the World Series, and if we don’t do that we think of it as a failure, the players do. You know, 95 wins is a lot of wins, but we are trying to win a lot more than 95."
