Multiple major league sources suggest that rumors of progress in talks between the Red Sox and Padres about a deal involving San Diego slugger Adrian Gonzalez have been dramatically overstated. One source said that there was nothing to the idea that trade talks are heating up.
The Sox, naturally, plan to monitor Gonzalez' availability this offseason. But as of now, there's a sizable gap between what the Padres would seek and what the Sox would offer for the All-Star first baseman. As such, if there is a deal to be made, there could be a greater likelihood of getting a deal done during the season -- as the Sox have managed to do for Jason Bay and Victor Martinez in the past two years -- than during the offseason.
