The Boston Herald is reporting that the Red Sox have expressed "preliminary interest" in free-agent shortstop Marco Scutaro. Scutaro, who turned 34 on Oct. 30, is coming off a season in which he set career highs in virtually every offensive category, including average (.282), OBP (.379), slugging (.409), homers (12) and steals (14) as a member of the Blue Jays. He also ranked as one of the top defensive shortstops in the American League.
The Sox have said on multiple occasions this offseason that they need to acquire a shortstop because Jed Lowrie has yet to demonstrate that he is capable of remaining healthy over the course of a big-league season. Lowrie missed most of 2009 while recovering from surgery on his left wrist.
The Herald's report also suggested that the Sox have expressed interest in pitchers Kelvim Escobar, who made one start for the Angels in 2009, and in reliever Rafael Soriano, who was tied for second in strikeouts by a reliever with 102 in 75.2 innings for the Braves. Soriano held opponents to a .194 average and .586 OPS while recording a 2.97 ERA and saving 27 games for the Braves.
