Making his weekly appearance on The Big Show on Monday, Patriots coach Bill Belichick explained his thought process at the end of the fourth quarter of his team's 35-34 loss to the Colts on Sunday night. Belichick spent most of the first part of the segment explaining the decision to go for it on fourth-and-2 at the New England 28-yard line with 2:08 left and the Pats leading by six points.
"We felt good about the play," he said. "We tried to win the game on that play, it didn’t work out."
Asked if he considered letting Indianapolis score after the fourth-down play felt short, Belichick said: "No, not really. I think you make them earn the winning touchdown."
The coach also reiterated that the plan to go for it on fourth down was being discussed heading into the third-down play, an incomplete pass on third-and-2. "While that play was going on we were already talking about fourth down." When asked if he definitely thought the decision to run the play on fourth down was the correct one, Belichick said, "Yeah, absolutely."
Belichick also talked about the team's performance throughout the game, including analysis of the effectiveness of rookie offensive tackle Sebastian Vollmer.
