On Tuesday’s Dennis & Callahan show, the hosts discussed the recent incident involving a local high school football player head-butting an opponent who had lost his helmet.
James LaShoto of Arlington Catholic is being charged with assault and battery after hitting Abington’s Daniel Curtin during a game on Sept. 19. Curtin missed 10 days of school and two football games while recovering.
No penalty was called on LaShoto as officials did not see the incident (it was away from the ball). LaShoto was suspended two games by Arlington Catholic, and his lawyer, Ronald Martignetti, said the punishment was discussed with Abington High School administrative and team officials before being delivered.
Martignetti called into D&C Tuesday to weigh in on the debate.
Said Martignetti: "I don’t think that this matter has helped the LaShoto boy — it certainly hasn’t. I don’t want to be so presumptuous as to tell the Curtins how to raise their son — my wife and I are raising eight of our own, and I know it’s a formidable task — I just think that they’re not doing anything for the Curtin boy either by pursuing this. I think that this should have been handled [by] the leagues — an argument can be placed that it should have been handled more firmly by the leagues — but it’s grossly misplaced to have this in the criminal court."
Martignetti offered an explanation as to why his client "crossed the line."
"It’s my guy’s position that [the helmet] came off in the play, and my guy’s view was that, 'I tried to get in his face and say, ‘Stop cut-blocking me.' ' ”
