The Celtics came all the way back from a 14-point first-half deficit to grab a five-point lead in the final two minutes, only to see their effort go for naught when the Mavericks closed on a 7-0 run to send Boston to an 89-87 loss. Dirk Nowitzki's 16-foot jumper from the wing with 17 seconds left broke a tie, and the Celtics came up short when Kevin Garnett's turnaround jumper from the corner as time expired fell well short of the bucket.
The contest was the second in as many nights for the Celtics, who are now halfway through their four-game roadtrip. After getting dominated for the first half in Dallas, the Celtics found their legs in the second half, erasing a deficit that had reached as many as 14 points. But after taking an 87-82 advantage with 1:58 remaining, the C's missed all five of their remaining shots, opening the door for the Mavericks comeback.
Paul Pierce led Celtics scorers with 24 points and added seven boards. Garnett, meanwhile, matched a season high with 15 boards while dropping 18 points. Rajon Rondo had 11 points and 15 assists. The Mavericks were led by Nowitzki's 25 points. Tyson Chandler added 12 points and 13 boards, while Jason Terry scored 17 off the bench for Dallas.
