The Phillies blasted the Dodgers by a 10-4 count in Game 5 of the National League Championship Series to advance to the World Series for the second straight season. Philadelphia's offensive surge came on the strength of four homers, including two by Jayson Werth: a three-run shot in the bottom of the first inning against Dodgers starter Vicente Padilla that gave the Phillies a 3-1 lead they never relinquished, and another solo smash in the seventh.
Though Phillies starter Cole Hamels struggled in allowing three runs in 4.1 innings, the Philadelphia bullpen shut down the Dodgers offense after he left the game. Phillies relievers combined to allow one run on three hits in 4.2 innings.
Philadelphia marched past the Dodgers in five games for the second straight year. The Phillies will now seek to become the first National League team since the Cincinnati Reds in 1975-76 to repeat as champions. They await the winner of the American League Championship Series, where the Yankees have won three of the first four games against the Angels.
