Francona on D&H: Big Papi is owed an apology

Red Sox manager Terry Francona checked in with Dale & Holley to talk about the upcoming ALDS against the Angels. Francona touched on a number of topics, including what he viewed as unfair treatment of David Ortiz earlier this season.

 

"I think there's a lot of people that actually owe David an apology," Francona said. "Having an opinion is one thing. And everybody's supposed to, I understand that. But there were some pretty nasty opinions. And some pretty vocal: 'He ought to quit. He ought to go home.' His first two months were miserable. I mean, they were flat-out miserable. His last four months have been just about as good as anybody in the game. So, that's just not righting the shift. That's a pretty good pace. He had a chance his last at-bat, if he could have found a way to get a hit, to have a hundred RBIs. From where he started, that was incredible."

 

Francona said he has not finalized the ALDS roster yet, with the two main holdups related to the condition of Manny Delcarmen and Rocco Baldelli.

 

"We've got a workout today at 3, so we'll watch Manny throw," Francona said. "Rocco, if he's making enough progress, we might wait until tomorrow morning just to see if there's enough progress."
