Tom Brady was a guest on the Dennis & Callahan show Monday morning, talking about the Patriots' 27-21 victory over the Ravens yesterday. Brady addressed comments from former teammate Rodney Harrison criticizing the quarterback for encouraging the referee to flag Baltimore for roughing the passer.
During halftime of Sunday night's "Football Night in America" telecast on NBC, Harrison told Brady to "Take off the skirt and put on some slacks. Toughen up."
After listening to the audio of Harrison's comments, Brady laughed.
"Rodney's been fined more than any player in the history of the NFL, so I can understand why he's sensitive about hits on the quarterback," Brady said.
"Rodney's like my brother," Brady added later. "I love Rodney. There's nothing Rodney could ever say that would bother me. He's one my great friends and teammates. If I was a football player, I'd want to be Rodney Harrison. There's nobody that played the game like Rodney. He played with all heart. ... It's fun to see him on TV. He hits as hard on TV as he did when he was playing, which is hard to believe. But he finds ways to get after everybody."
Brady said he understands the frustration of defenders such as Ray Lewis, who was vocal in his complaining about yesterday's calls.
"It's very frustrating," Brady sympathized, adding: "It's not like the quarterbacks make up the rules."
Brady said he was encouraged by the improved performance of the New England offense, going against one of the NFL's top defenses.
"Hopefully we're at the beginning stages of finding out what this offense can be," Brady said.
Looking ahead to next Sunday's game against the undefeated Broncos, Brady had complimentary things to say about first-year Denver coach Josh McDaniels, a former Patriots assistant. But those feelings will be put aside come Sunday.
Said Brady: "There's nothing more I would like to give him than his first NFL loss."
