Red Sox prospect Casey Kelly, currently playing shortstop for Single A Greenville in the South Atlantic League playoffs, will conclude his unique season by playing short in the Florida Instructional League and the Arizona Fall League, according to Red Sox farm director Mike Hazen. In the AFL, Kelly will be on the taxi squad of the Mesa Solar Sox, eligible to play two days a week. After the conclusion of the AFL, the pitcher/shortstop will sit down with members of the organization to discuss whether he will continue to develop as a pitcher, position player or both.
Kelly, the Sox' first-round draft pick in 2008, spent the first half of the year as a pitcher for Greenville and High A Salem. Between the two levels, he went 7-5 with a 2.08 ERA. He showed a willingness to attack the strike zone with three potential plus pitches (fastball, curve, change), resulting in a 74-to-15 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 17 starts.
Kelly hit .224 with a .305 OBP, .313 slugging mark and .618 OPS in 32 games for Greenville. The 19-year-old is currently playing in the South Atlantic League playoffs with Greenville.
