AROUND THE WEB:

— The Blue Jays have suspended center fielder Kevin Pillar after he shouted a derogatory term at Braves pitcher Jason Motte during a game on Wednesday night.

After Motte struck Pillar out to end the seventh inning, Pillar yelled the derogatory term toward the mound. Pillar spoke the next day about the incident and owned up to what he did.

“I regret saying it,” Pillar said. “I’m going to use myself as an example of how there are words out there you can’t use. It’s not a word I use ever … It’s something that just came out.”

Pillar went on to say using the word, “helped extend the use of a word that has no place in baseball, in sports or anywhere in society today. I’m completely and utterly embarrassed and feel horrible to have put the fans, my teammates and the Blue Jays organization in this position.”

“I will be an example of how words can offend a lot of people,” Pillar said to reporters. “I hope people see this as just an error in judgment.”

Toronto’s general manager Ross Atkins flew to Atlanta to announce the suspension and personally apologize on behalf of the Blue Jays.

“A large group decided that was appropriate,” Atkins said of the suspension. “There is no question that was in the heat of the moment, but that’s no excuse.”

Pillar will sit out Thursday’s game against the Braves and Friday’s game in Baltimore. He will also donate approximately $6,066 to charity and pay an undisclosed fine.

— A former Chargers security guard has pled guilty to masturbating while working the sidelines of a game last December. Fans caught him on video in the act and it went viral.

The man was wearing an Elite Security jacket and was identified by San Diego investigators. He was charged with one count of committing a lewd act in public. A judge sentenced him to three years probation and counseling.

He was fired right after the incident and has allegedly surrendered his security license.

“We are aware of the disturbing actions of an Elite security staff member at Sunday’s game,” the Chargers said at the time. “We apologize to any fans who may have witnessed the incident.”

QUOTE OF THE DAY: “We’re not scared of Cleveland. They’re not the Monstars. They’re not on Space Jam.” — Isaiah Thomas, on the Celtics’ Conference Finals series against the Cavaliers, which continues with Game 2 Friday night
