The Red Sox have activated RHP Junichi Tazawa from Triple A Pawtucket and designated reliever Billy Traber for assignment, according to WEEI.com's Rob Bradford. The team has also acquired and activated former Mariners infielder Chris Woodward. A corresponding move has yet to be announced.
Tazawa has made two starts for the PawSox since being promoted from Double A Portland. In 11.1 Triple A innings he has allowed three earned runs and struck out six. The 23-year-old right-hander had a 2.57 ERA and 88 strikeouts in 98 innings for Portland. Tazawa will be available out of the bullpen on Friday in New York.
In 10 major league seasons, Woodward has a .243 average. After spending his first six seasons in Toronto, Woodward spent three years in the National League with the Mets and Braves. In 2008, he bounced around the Yankees, Phillies, and Brewers minor league affiliates before signing with the Mariners for this season. In just 20 games Woodward hit just .239 with no homers and five RBI.
