Newly-acquired Jhonny Peralta hit a pair of home runs off Jon Lester as the Detroit Tigers barely held on for a 6-5 win over the Red Sox, Friday night at Fenway Park in the opener of a three-game series. David Ortiz belted his ninth career grand slam with one out in the ninth off closer Jose Valverde to make it a one-run game but Mike Cameron struck out looking with the tying and winning runs on base as the Sox fell just short
Lester allowed a season-high 11 hits and four runs over six-plus innings in suffering his sixth loss against 11 wins this season.
Armando Galarraga, who came within one out of a perfect game against the Indians on June 2, had to come out of the game one out shy of qualifying for the win when Kevin Youkilis lined a ball off his right ankle in the fifth inning. Robbie Weinhardt came in to throw two scoreless innings in the sixth and seventh to qualify for the win, his first in the majors.
Marco Scutaro homered to the first row of Monster seats in left in the fifth inning for Boston's only run. Tim Wakefield, who turns 44 on Monday, came on in relief to start the eighth, allowed two runs in two innings and became the oldest pitcher ever to appear in a game for the Red Sox.
