According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, both the Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays are talking to the Cleveland Indians about the possibility of a deal to net both catcher/first baseman Victor Martinez and pitcher Cliff Lee. According to Sherman, the Indians need to pare payroll for both this year and next, and dealing Lee (owed approx. $2 million this year with an $8 million option for 2010) and Martinez (owed roughly $2 million over the rest of this year with a $7 million option for 2010) could be a reaction to that mandate.
Sherman also suggests that the Red Sox are not yet willing to include pitcher Clay Buchholz in a potential deal.
