Drew to receive MRI on hamstring

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- The Red Sox hope to have J.D. Drew's tight left hamstring examined on Wednesday, with Drew saying that the hope is that an MRI can be performed in order to get a precise diagnosis. Drew said that the hamstring has been bothering him for the past three or four weeks, and that it refused to loosen while he ran pre-game sprints just prior to the start of Tuesday's game.

Drew was scratched just minutes before the start of Tuesday's game. The Sox plan on sitting him in Wednesday's day game, in hopes that he might be able to return to the lineup on Friday, following an off-day on Thursday.

“I’ve been dealing with it for a while now and it just got too much before the game. I tried to run some sprints and I really just couldn’t get loose. I had to tell Tito and them right before the game that there really wasn’t any way to perform like I needed to out there so I had to make that call,” said Drew. “I’ve been dealing with this for three to four weeks. It’s just been getting gradually worse.” 

“It’s like a strain. It’s not like a muscle pull as much as really painful when you try to an extended part of running. It’s just been really limiting to my stride length. It kind of hinders everything. Some days are worse but the last two or three days, really since the day game in Seattle, have been pretty bad.”

Drew said that he is hopeful that the injury will not require him to be shut down for any extended stretch, and that an eam on Wednesday would be for the purpose of figuring out the proper course of treatment.
