Red Sox outfielder/first baseman Mark Kotsay has cleared out of his Fenway Park locker after being designated for assingment by the club. Kotsay was an apparent casualty of the need to clear a spot on the 25-man major-league roster for newly acquired first baseman Adam LaRoche.
The 33-year-old was hitting .257 with a .291 OBP and .615 OPS in 27 games for the Sox this year. Acquired from the Braves last August, Kotsay was re-signed in January to provide depth for the Red Sox bench. But LaRoche rendered some of Kotsay's skills -- an ability to hit right-handed pitching and play first base -- redundant, making him the odd man out with the arrival of the former Pittsburgh Pirates player. The Sox now have 10 days to trade Kotsay, at which point they can either release him or - if he will accept an assignment - move him to the minors.
"This is a guy who immediately became a leader in our clubhouse," said manager Terry Francona. "When we got LaRoche he became a little redundant."
