Okajima's struggles lead to Sox loss

Hideki Okajima allowed five straight singles (including two mishandled bunts) after coming on for Daniel Bard in the eighth inning, letting the Mariners come away with a come-from-behind, 4-2 victory over the Red Sox in the teams' series finale Sunday in Seattle. With the loss the Red Sox fall five games in back of the Rays for the top spot in the Wild Card chase, with the Yankees now leading the Sox by eight games in the division. Red Sox starter Daisuke Matsuzaka pitched six innings, giving up one run on four hits, striking out four and walking five. It was the second time this season Matsuzaka -- who threw 110 pitches -- issued as many as five free passes this season, and the 14th time in his career he has succumbed to such wildness.

 

The Sox' offense came in the fourth inning when Kevin Youkilis doubled in J.D. Drew and Adrian Beltre plated David Ortiz with a bloop single.
