The Red Sox plan to activate both starter Clay Buchholz and infielder Jed Lowrie from the disabled list on Wednesday. In order to clear spots on the major league roster for the pair, the team intends to designate first baseman Ryan Shealy for assignment and to option left-hander Dustin Richardson back to Triple-A Pawtucket.
Buchholz (10-4, 2.45 ERA) has been out since June 26 due to a left lower hamstring strain. Lowrie has missed the entire season while recovering from mononucleosis, but he completed a strong rehab (.367 average, 1.047 OPS) spanning 10 combined games between Single-A Lowell and Triple-A Pawtucket.
Shealy flew out as a pinch-hitter in the eighth inning of Tuesday night's game. He went 0-for-7 with the Sox. Richardson delivered a big strikeout in the 10th inning, helping the Sox to nearly escape the jam that ultimately cost them the game. The left-hander has a 2.57 ERA in 13 appearances (7 innings) with the Sox this year.
