Red Sox - A's Pregame Notes: Bates called up, Bailey to DL

First baseman/outfielder Aaron Bates has been called up by the Red Sox for Monday night's game against the Oakland Athletics. With 1B/OF Jeff Bailey landing on the disabled list with a high ankle sprain suffered on Saturday and Mark Kotsay hobbled by a calf injury, the Sox needed more depth at first base. Bates is hitting ninth in Monday night's lineup against the A's. To make room for Bates on the 40-man roster, Jed Lowrie was moved from the 15-day to the 60-day disabled list. Lowrie has been sidelined for almost three months, so his move to the 60-day is merely procedural (players on the 60-day D.L. are not considered members of the 40-man roster). 1B/OF Jeff Bailey has been placed on the disabled list with a high ankle sprain. Terry Francona had the following to say before Monday night's game:

  • Jeff Bailey underwent an MRI, but even without the results, it was clear that his injury is severe enough that he had to go on the D.L.
  • Mark Kotsay is limping around a little, too, because of a calf injury. The Sox hope that he'll be fine after All-Star break.
  • Aaron Bates was "kind of the consensus of the organization" for a call-up. Francona described him as a good defensive first baseman who has some pop and is young. Francona said that the team feels that a call-up can hold the fort between now and the All-Star break.
  • Jed Lowrie had a good day in Double-A for Portland going 3-for-5 at the plate. His rehab clock is running out later this week, meaning he can't play on a minor-league rehab assignment beyond the end of this week. The Red Sox could, however, option him to the minors so that he could continue playing at that level.
