Temple's Addazio named BC coach

New Boston College athletic director Brad Bates did not wait long to find a football coach to replace Frank Spaziani, as the school announced Tuesday that Steve Addazio would take the job. Addazio, 53, is a native of Farmington, Conn., who spent the last two years as head coach at Temple. He also has assisted at Florida, Indiana, Notre Dame and Syracuse.

"Steve Addazio brings three critical traits to Boston College football," Bates said in a statement. "First, he genuinely cares about his students and will facilitate their formation and development in meaningful ways that creates a family culture extending into the entire BC community. Second, he has a passion that is contagious and an energy that will motivate those fortunate to meet him. Finally, he is a proven winner with an extensive history of success as an assistant and head coach that includes two national championships. We are very excited to have Steve Addazio leading Boston College football and look forward to an extraordinary future."

Addazio compiled a record of 13-11 in his two seasons at Temple. From 2005-10, he assisted Urban Meyer at Florida, serving as offensive coordinator the last two years. The Gators won national championships in 2006 and 2008.

Addazio started his college coaching career at Western Connecticut, where he assisted Paul Pasqualoni from 1984-87. He then became a successful high school coach in Chesire, Conn., before returning to the college ranks in 1995 at Syracuse, rejoining Pasqualoni (then the Orange's head coach). Addazio was an assistant at Notre Dame under Bob Davie from 1999-2001 and then spent three years at Indiana (2002-04) under Gerry DiNardo.

Addazio played collegiately at Central Connecticut, playing on the offensive and defensive lines, and received a tryout with the Patriots after his graduation in 1981. He and his wife, Kathy, have two grown daughters and a 20-year-old son, Louie, who is a sophomore tight end at Syracuse.
