Sox name Arnie Beyeler first base coach
The Red Sox announced that they have named Arnie Beyeler, their manager for the last two years in Triple-A Pawtucket, to be their new big league first base coach.
"Arnie has had a successful professional career as a player, coach and manager," manager John Farrell said in a statement. "This allows him to bring a wealth of experience to this position."
The 2013 season will mark Beyeler's first on a big league staff but his 10th in the Red Sox organization. Prior to his promotion to Pawtucket (where he replaced current Sox bench coach Torey Lovullo), he spent 2007-10 managing Double-A Portland. He also served as an A-ball manager in the Sox system from 2000-02. This year, he managed a constantly changing roster in Pawtucket to the team's first Governor's Cup (Triple-A International League championship) since 1984.
Around his stints as a manager in the Sox system, Beyeler's spent time coaching in the Yankees system (1997-99), the Rangers' system (2003-05) and the Padres system (2006) before spending the past six seasons working with top Sox prospects as they move through the upper levels of the farm system.
Before his coaching career, Beyeler played in the minors for six seasons in the Tigers system.
With his naming as the first base coach, the Sox now have most of their coaching staff under John Farrell completed. The team features Torey Lovullo as the bench coach, Brian Butterfield as the third base coach, Juan Nieves as pitching coach and Gary Tuck as the lone holdover as bullpen coach. The team is still conducting interviews related to its hitting instruction, which may feature a two-coach approach.
