Boomer Esiason made his weekly appearance on Dennis & Callahan Monday morning, saying the 3-6 Jets are in a tough position as they figure out what to do about Mark Sanchez' struggles.
"Here's where they screwed themselves up: They don't have an alternative, right? In order to see the good of Tim Tebow, you've got to see a lot of him, and if you're going to see a lot of him, you're going to see a lot of bad football being played," Esiason said. "I don't know. That's a long flight back from Seattle last night. I don't know what was discussed. I'm sure they looked at the films and I'm sure they saw a very nervous quarterback in Mark Sanchez to the point where I guess you've got to do something if you're the New York Jets. I just don't know when he's going to pull the trigger."
As for Rex Ryan's fate, Esiason said he wasn't sure if the Jets would fire the coach that led them to two AFC championship games.
"If they don't turn the season around, I'm sure Woody Johnson is going to do something," he said. "I'm not sure what it's going to be."
The Patriots will play the Colts on Sunday in a matchup of 6-3 teams. The Colts have been led by first overall pick Andrew Luck, who has had no problem filling Peyton Manning's shoes and making Indianapolis a contender again.
"For many years to come now, we're going to be seeing the second coming of Peyton Manning, maybe even better than Peyton Manning right now simply because he's going to break all of Peyton Manning's Indianapolis Colts records for his rookie season, he's going to get more wins than Peyton Manning has, and he's the reason why they're winning," Esiason said. "Don't think anything other than that, because this kid is the real deal."
Speaking of Manning, Esiason said that he feels the Broncos are better than the Texans and are the best team in the AFC.
"Peyton Manning is playing out of his mind," he said. "He has raised the level of everybody on that offense to the point where Eric Decker might be a Pro Bowl wide receiver, for crying out loud. They have every aspect of it on offense going on right now. Their defense, believe it or not because they lost to the New England Patriots, is better than the Patriots' defense. It's right there. You can see it. If New England has to go into Denver in the playoffs, that will be one hell of a football game."
With the 1-7 Chiefs set to take on the Steelers Monday night in Pittsburgh, Esiason pointed out that former Pats personnel executive Scott Pioli has fallen out of favor greatly in Kansas City.
"The word is that he has basically turned off everybody in that building out there," Esiason said. "The owner's not happy and the fans certainly are not happy. They don't want to do it the Patriot way anymore out in Kansas City. They want to figure out a new way to do it."
