Brad Bates, who has been athletic director at Miami (Ohio) for the past 10 years, was named AD at Boston College during a Tuesday afternoon press conference in Chestnut Hill.
Prior to his stint at Miami, Bates was the senior associate AD at Vanderbilt from 1985-2002.
"My wife Michele and I are honored to have this tremendous opportunity, and we feel an enormous sense of responsibility to the students, faculty, staff, alumni and fans of this extraordinary institution," Bates said. "Boston College offers a world-class education with first-rate athletics in one of the nation's best cities, and its Jesuit, Catholic tradition demands that we seek knowledge in ways that better the human condition and promote student development. I look forward to joining the Eagle family."
A Michigan native, Bates was a walk-on defensive back at the University of Michigan, and he went on to earn a scholarship under legendary coach Bo Schembechler.
Bates replaces Gene DeFilippo, who retired Sept. 20 after 15 years at BC.
"I am delighted that Brad Bates will be our next director of athletics," said BC president William Leahy. "He is thoughtful, a proven leader, and someone who understands and supports Boston College's commitment to excellence in both academics and athletics. I look forward to working with him."
