Former Mets general manager Jim Duquette joined Mut & Merloni on Tuesday to discuss baseball's current playoff picture and the chances of Blue Jays manager John Farrell becoming the next manager of the Sox.
There has been rumored friction between Farrell and general manager Alex Anthopoulous, something Farrell denied to reporters on Monday. Duquette, however, said there is a "disconnect" between the Toronto manager and the GM. Farrell served as Boston's pitching coach from 2006-2010.
Duqeutte said that based on Bobby Valentine's dismissal from the Mets following the 2002, he wouldn't be surprised if Valentine has some things to say on his way out of Boston should the Red Sox choose to fire him.
"Right at the end of his tenure [in New York], our owner said to Bobby and Steve Phillips, 'You guys are attached at the hip. Your fates are tied together,' and in the end, Fred Wilpon decided to fire Bobby and kept Steve," Duquette recalled. "Bobby's response wasn't like he was mad that he got fired, it was like, 'What, he gets to stay? He gets to stay? I get fired, and he stays?' So there was some subtle comments like that that would come out in the press, and I think you'll see some of that stuff.
"I don't think Bobby will just come in and blow the thing up, but I think you've seen some of his opinions already come out, some of his questions about the medical staff in particular that I think he has concerns about. Those are the things that I think you'll see come out whenever they make the move."
