Stewart historically bad in latest Sox loss

ANAHEIM -- Zach Stewart had a historically bad Red Sox debut Wednesday night at Angels Stadium, leading his new team to another loss.

Stewart, the pitcher who came over from the White Sox in the trade for Kevin Youkilis, allowed nine runs on 10 hits over three innings. The end result was a 10-3 loss to the Angels.

Stewart became the first pitcher since 1903 to allow nine runs in his Red Sox debut. Pep Deininger still holds the franchise record for most runs allowed in a first game with the Sox, having given up 11 on April 26, 1902. With Triple-A Pawtucket this season, Stewart had gone 3-5 with a 3.94 ERA in 11 starts. 

After the game, Stewart was told he would be optioned to Pawtucket, with Daniel Bard slated to be activated to the 25-man roster.

The Angels jumped all over Stewart with four runs in the first inning, a pair coming on a two-run blast from Kendrys Morales. Los Angeles would go on to score one in the second and four in the third. Chris Iannetta also went deep against Stewart, hitting a two-run homer.

The Red Sox bullpen pitched fairly well in relief of Stewart, with Junichi Tazawa, Andrew Miller and Alfredo Aceves teaming up to give up just one run over the last five innings.

Angels starter C.J. Wilson picked up the win, giving up three runs on eight hits over six innings. The only two players with multiple-hit games for the Red Sox were Mauro Gomez (3) and Mike Aviles (2). 

With the loss, the Red Sox drop to 62-69. It's the third time this season the Sox have been seven games under .500.
