Shoppach denies authoring texts to owners
Speaking after his team's game against the Nationals Sunday, Mets catcher Kelly Shoppach denied any involvement in the organization of the Red Sox players' July 26 meeting with ownership.
It had been stated in a New York Daily News report Sunday that Shoppach had authored the text message sent to the Red Sox owners, sending it on Adrian Gonzalez' cell phone.
"I’m really disappointed that my name was even brought up in that,” Shoppach told reporters in Washington Sunday. “I wasn’t behind any texts. I actually didn’t even attend the meeting. It was on an off-day in New York and I stayed back in Texas with my family. I’ve already gotten a few text messages from former teammates apologizing that my name was even brought up in it."
When asked about the Daily News report, Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington would only say, "We're trying to move on and focus on what's going on up here. There's nothing more I can add to it."

On that day, Bogaerts, the Red Sox' top prospect, was promoted from Double-A Portland Pawtucket, with the 20-year-old becoming one of the youngest position players in the affiliate's history.
