The Patriots will not be following up a workout with Plaxico Burress with a contract offer, according to a report by ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Schefter was the first to report Sunday that the controversial wide receiver, who turned 35 on Sunday, was in Foxboro for a workout and a physical with the team. But after a workout, Schefter says the team has decided to move on.
On the field, Burress is most noted for his game-winning catch with 36 seconds remaining in Super Bowl XLII as a member of the Giants, a catch that ended the dreams of New England's 19-0 season in 2007. Off the field, Burress was sent to prison for nearly two years after being convicted of two felony counts of gun possession when his loaded glock went off in a New York City nightclub in Nov. 2008. The shot went into his leg and no others were injured.
In July 2011, Burress agreed to a one-year contract worth approximately $3.017 million guaranteed with the Jets after turning down a two-year deal from the Steelers that was rumored to be valued at a little more than the Jets offer, but without as much guaranteed money.
In his first game back in New York at MetLife Stadium, in a pre-season game against the Bengals, Burress caught a pass from Mark Sanchez in the first play of the first drive by the Jets, and later caught a pass for a touchdown in the next quarter. Then, last Oct. 23, in a game against the Chargers, Burress caught three touchdown passes from Sanchez tying a game career high.
Burress has 63 touchdowns in 10 NFL seasons. For more, visit the Patriots team page at weei.com/patriots.
