UPDATE: Jacoby Ellsbury was a late scratch from the Red Sox lineup due to what manager Bobby Valentine characterized as a "very little situation [that] he wanted to play through." According to a team source, Ellsbury has a minor groin injury. Valentine said that, with the Sox playing a day game on Sunday, he wanted to have Ellsbury rest on Saturday night with the anticipation that he will return to the lineup in a day. With Ellsbury out, Ryan Kalish will play center and bat leadoff.
"I’m just being safe with Jacoby. He has a very little situation that he wanted to play through. With the day game tomorrow, I vetoed it. Ryan is healthy, ready to go," said Valentine. "[Ellsbury's leg is] not an issue. But it could become an issue. Now that he’s not playing, it’s an issue.”
For the first time since his return from a hamstring injury on July 13, Will Middlebrooks is out of the Red Sox lineup, with Nick Punto getting a rare start at third base. Middlebrooks was 0-for-8 in his last two games and 4-for-22 in his last five. Punto is starting for the first time since July 22, the last time that he appeared in a game.
Jarrod Saltalamacchia, who was not at Fenway Park on Friday due to an ear infection, is back in the lineup as designated hitter against Twins right-hander Cole De Vries. Kelly Shoppach will get the start behind the plate for Clay Buchholz.
