Dennis Eckersley, appearing on the Dale & Holley Show, expressed surprise about the controversy surrounding his candid discussion about Josh Beckett's bid for a no-hitter during a broadcast on Wednesday night. Eckersley referred several times to Beckett's bid for a "no-no" several times prior to the first hit allowed by the pitcher, a single by Curtis Granderson in the seventh inning.
"I don’t know what went down the other day. I don’t even know when I started to talk no-no," said Eckersley. "I know that when the guy bunted, it made me think, ‘Hey—wait a minute. Why are you bunting? The guy’s got a no-no.’ If I had to do it all over again, I guess maybe I’ll wait a little longer. I don’t know. I didn’t realize you can’t talk no-no. When do you talk no-no? Never?
"I was more excited than Beckett. I am psyched. Can you imagine to be in a booth and call a no-no? It was upsetting when the guy got the first hit. I was so disappointed because I thought, ‘Here we go—this is coming, that’s going to be great.’ I think that Beckett can throw a no-hitter every time out there."
