Sox recall Lavarnway, place Nava on DL
The Red Sox recalled Ryan Lavarnway from Triple-A Pawtucket where he was hitting .295 with a .376 OBP, .439 slugging mark and .815 OPS along with eight homers in 83 games. To make room for him on the 25-man roster, they placed Daniel Nava on the disabled list with a wrist injury.
With David Ortiz on the DL with his Achilles injury and both Mike Aviles (toe) and Kelly Shoppach (shin) dealing with injuries that, while not severe enough to lead them to the disabled list, have circumscribed their availability, the Sox elected to call up Lavarnway to add a right-handed option to the bench.
Lavarnway hit .231/.302/.436 in 39 at-bats with the Sox late in the 2011 season, including two home runs, while serving as the starting catcher on the final two days of the season.
"I loved him in spring training and since he's continued to make improvements," said Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine. "Offensively, [PawSox manager Arnie Beyeler] says he's definitely ready and will continue to improve and we hope he continues to improve. Defensively, is the same –– that he's ready, but he want him to continue to improve."
