Reeling them in: Sox win third straight
David Ortiz, Kelly Shoppach and Cody Ross all homered off Mark Buehrle in support of Clay Buchholz as the Red Sox beat the Marlins, 7-5, Tuesday night in the opener of a nine-game homestand at Fenway. The Sox won their third straight to move over .500 again at 34-33. The Red Sox overcame some shoddy fielding and an inconsistent night from Buchholz to improve to 15-19 this year at Fenway.
Buchholz was staked to leads of 4-2 and 5-3 but could not hold them as Logan Morrison had a career night for the Marlins. He had hits in his first three at-bats, including a towering homer off Buchholz in the first inning that put the Marlins on top 2-0. Buchholz allowed nine hits and five runs in six innings, striking out three and walking one while improving to a team-best 8-2 on the season. Buchholz actually saw his ERA increase from 5.38 to 5.53 on the season.
Ortiz got the runs right back in the bottom half of the inning with his 17th homer of the season -- and eighth against left-handed pitching. The Red Sox would take the lead on Kelly Shoppach's fourth of the season, also with a runner aboard, in the second inning. The Red Sox continued their homer barrage against Buehrle in the fourth when Ross blasted a drive to the Monster seats in left-center in his second at-bat back from the disabled list.
While the Red Sox got good news with the return of Ross, they may have another injury to be concered with as Dustin Pedroia left after appearing to injure his right hand. After popping out in the bottom of the seventh, he shook his right hand several times and was replaced by Nick Punto at second base in the top of the eighth.
Ryan Kalish had a rough night in the field, stopping short on Morrison's two-run double in the fifth that tied the game, 5-5, and misplaying a routine fly to center to open the seventh, allowing Hanley Ramirez to reach third base on the three-base error. But Matt Albers and Andrew Miller recovered and bailed him out as the Marlins stranded Ramirez.
Alfredo Aceves pitched a perfect ninth for his 17th save in 20 chances. The Red Sox moved over .500 this year in interleague play at 7-6.
