Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine told WHDH Channel 7's Joe Amorosino during the taping of his weekly segment for Sports Xtra Sunday afternoon that Daniel Bard's turn in the starting rotation will be skipped. Valentine said that Bard would be available for work out of the bullpen prior to his next scheduled start, which would be April 27 in Chicago against the White Sox.
Bard was scheduled to pitch Sunday night against the Yankees and CC Sabathia, but that game was postponed due to inclement weather.
Valentine confirmed the move to the media late Sunday afternoon, reiterating that while Bard may see some time out of the bullpen the next few days, he still is considered a member of the starting rotation.
"As the plan is now," the manager said, "he's our fifth starter."
Valentine said if Bard did relieve prior to Friday it would be with the Red Sox leading in the eighth inning or coming in for a high-leverage situation in the seventh inning.
The interview with Valentine can be seen Sunday night during Sports Xtra, which airs at 11:25 p.m.
